It was a historic afternoon at Maimonides Park, with Brooklyn FC’s men’s team finally making its long-awaited USL Championship debut.

The team marked this special occasion with a gritty 1–0 victory over Indy Eleven in front of a lively Brooklyn crowd.

The pivotal moment for Brooklyn FC came in the 26th minute, when forward Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly converted, scoring the first goal in the team’s history. The chance arrived after midfielder Peter Mangione was brought down inside the box, giving the hosts an early opportunity to take control.

From there, Brooklyn played with a mix of energy and edge that reflected the tone set by head coach Marlon LeBlanc.

“We’ve got a little bit of flair,” LeBlanc said afterward. “A little bit of fun. A little bit of fight.”

Those qualities were evident throughout the first half. Mangione nearly opened the scoring earlier in the 21st minute, forcing a sharp save from Indy goalkeeper Eric Dick. Obregón also tested the defense with a pair of efforts from outside the box as Brooklyn looked comfortable pushing the tempo in its inaugural match.

Indy Eleven found their rhythm late in the half, generating chances through forwards Charlie Sharp and Dylan Sing. But Brooklyn goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich stood tall, producing key stops to preserve the lead heading into halftime.

The second half told a different story. Indy ramped up the pressure, probing for an equalizer with shots from inside the box and from distance. Brooklyn spent long stretches defending its penalty area, relying on Rizvanovich and a disciplined back line to weather the storm.

Rizvanovich delivered several crucial saves during that stretch, anchoring a defense that absorbed wave after wave of attacks.

Brooklyn nearly doubled its lead midway through the second half when a close-range effort was blocked, with the rebound sailing over the crossbar. It proved to be the hosts’ best chance to put the match out of reach.

Still, one goal was enough.

As Indy pushed forward in the closing minutes, Brooklyn held firm, grinding out a result that delivered three points—and a memorable start—for the club’s inaugural men’s side.

Next up, Brooklyn FC heads on the road to face Detroit City FC on March 14.

The team will return to Maimonides Park a week later for its next home fixture against regional rival Hartford Athletic on March 21.

For now, though, the first chapter has been written—and it came with a clean sheet, a historic goal, and a win the Brooklyn way.
