The rumors swirled all winter. Brazil. South Florida. Big numbers, bigger headlines.

In the end, though, Denis Bouanga isn’t going anywhere.

Los Angeles FC announced this week that the Gabon international has signed a new Designated Player contract extension through 2028, with a club option that could keep him in Black & Gold through the 2029–30 season. For a club with championship ambitions every year, it’s the most important signature they could have secured.

Bouanga, 31, has been the engine of LAFC’s attack since arriving from AS Saint-Étienne in August 2022. He wasted little time making his mark, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner in Portland to clinch the 2022 Supporters’ Shield before helping power LAFC to its first MLS Cup title weeks later.

What followed was sustained dominance.

In 2023, Bouanga exploded for 20 regular-season goals to claim the MLS Golden Boot, finishing the year with 38 goals across all competitions — tying the club’s single-season record. He followed that with another 20-goal league campaign in 2024, earning back-to-back MLS Best XI nods and All-Star selections.

Then came 2025, when he somehow raised the bar again. Bouanga scored a career-high 24 regular-season goals, becoming the first player in MLS history to post three consecutive 20-goal seasons. Along the way, he surpassed Carlos Vela as LAFC’s all-time leading scorer. He now sits on 105 goals and 43 assists in 155 appearances across all competitions — production that has redefined the club’s record books.

That output also made him a target.

Reports linked Bouanga with a $13 million bid from Inter Miami CF, while Brazilian giants Fluminense FC were said to be pushing hard for his signature. LAFC rejected the advances, and Bouanga made his own position clear during preseason: he intended to stay.

Now, the paperwork matches the intent.

The extension also ensures continuity in what has quickly become one of the league’s most dangerous partnerships. Since the arrival of Son Heung-min, the duo has been electric, combining for 25 goals and eight assists in all competitions. Over a two-month stretch last season, they accounted for 18 consecutive LAFC goals, an MLS record for two teammates.

Bouanga has carried that form into 2026, already notching a hat trick in Concacaf Champions Cup play and adding a goal and assist in a statement opening win over Miami.

For LAFC co-president and GM John Thorrington, the message was simple: performance matters. Few in MLS have delivered with Bouanga’s consistency.

For Bouanga, the message was equally clear. Los Angeles feels like home, and the project still feels unfinished.

In a league where stars often come and go, LAFC has made sure its most reliable difference-maker will remain at the center of everything it hopes to win next.
