Philadelphia Union’s flawless start to the 2025 MLS season hit a roadblock on Sunday afternoon, as they fell 3-1 to Nashville SC at Subaru Park. Despite another stunning goal from Serbian midfielder Jovan Lukic, a series of defensive lapses and controversial VAR decisions ultimately cost the Union their unbeaten streak.
The match began with a high-octane tempo, but it was Nashville who struck first in the 15th minute. Sam Surridge capitalized on a mistimed defensive effort from Jakob Glesnes and a slip by Frankie Westfield, coolly slotting the ball past Andre Blake for an early lead. Philadelphia responded with increased pressure, and the breakthrough came in the 33rd minute. Off a recycled corner kick, Lukic unleashed a thunderous long-range shot into the back of the net, igniting the home crowd. It was the Serbian’s second spectacular goal in as many matches, showcasing his growing influence in midfield.
However, Nashville regained the upper hand just before halftime. Ahmed Qasem exploited a high defensive line, racing onto a long ball and finishing clinically to send the visitors into the break with a 2-1 lead.
The second half saw Philadelphia dominate possession in search of an equalizer, but their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by Nashville’s resolute defense and the heroics of goalkeeper Joe Willis. In the 60th minute, the Union thought they had earned a penalty when Quinn Sullivan was taken down in the box, but after a lengthy VAR review, the referee upheld the initial call of no foul.
The turning point came in the 78th minute when another VAR intervention resulted in a penalty for Nashville following a collision between Glesnes and Hany Mukhtar. Mukhtar stepped up to convert the spot kick, extending Nashville’s lead to 3-1. It was a dagger for the Union, who struggled to regain momentum.
Philadelphia had a chance to claw back in stoppage time when substitute Chris Donovan was fouled in the box. With regular penalty taker Daniel Gazdag already substituted, Sullivan took the responsibility but was denied by Willis, who also saved the follow-up attempt. Frustration boiled over moments later as Olwethu Makhanya received a red card for an off-ball incident, capping a disappointing afternoon for the Union.
Head coach Bradley Carnell acknowledged the team’s missed opportunities and defensive lapses but remained optimistic about their prospects. “We had our chances, and on another day, those go in. Credit to Nashville for their organization and execution,” Carnell said post-match.
While the result dropped Philadelphia from the top of the Eastern Conference standings, there were positives to take from Lukic’s continued brilliance and the team’s ability to create chances against a disciplined opponent. The Union will look to bounce back in their next match against St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday night, with fans hoping for a return to winning ways on Irish Heritage Night.
