Cristiano Ronaldo put criticisms to rest in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night.

After a subdued performance in Portugal's opening 1-1 draw with DR Congo sparked renewed debate over the 41-year-old's place in Roberto Martínez's lineup, the veteran forward responded with a record-breaking brace as Portugal overwhelmed Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston to kickstart their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Ronaldo wasted little time reminding the world why Martínez kept faith in him. Just six minutes in, João Cancelo's driven cross found the Portugal captain inside the penalty area, and the striker spun before rifling a first-time finish into the near post. The goal not only settled Portugal, but also etched Ronaldo into World Cup history as the first player ever to score in six different editions of the tournament.

Portugal never looked back.

Nuno Mendes doubled the advantage in the 17th minute with a brilliantly disguised free kick, aided by Ronaldo's clever decoy run that froze the Uzbek defense. Uzbekistan briefly thought they had found a way back when Azizjon Ganiev unleashed a spectacular strike midway through the first half, but VAR ruled the goal out after a foul on Cancelo in the buildup.

Moments later, Ronaldo struck again.

Bruno Fernandes threaded a perfectly weighted pass behind the defense, and Ronaldo calmly slotted past Abduvohid Nematov for his second of the evening and his 10th career World Cup goal, moving him past Eusébio as Portugal's outright leading scorer in World Cup history.

The second half followed much the same script. Uzbekistan enjoyed a brief spell of possession, but Diogo Costa was rarely troubled before Portugal added a fourth through an unfortunate own goal after a dangerous low cross ricocheted off defender Abdukodir Khusanov and goalkeeper Nematov into the net.

Substitute Rafael Leão completed the rout three minutes from time, smashing a loose ball into the roof of the net after Uzbekistan failed to clear their lines.

The performance was a dramatic turnaround from Portugal's frustrating opener and restored belief in one of the tournament's pre-competition favorites. Martínez's side looked sharper, more cohesive and considerably more aggressive, while the return of Rúben Dias brought added stability to the back line.

For Ronaldo, the night was about more than records. Criticism surrounding his place in the squad had dominated headlines throughout the week, but Portugal's captain delivered the response where it mattered most.

With four points from two matches, Portugal now heads into a decisive Group K showdown against Colombia knowing a victory would likely secure top spot and carry valuable momentum into the knockout rounds.

If there were doubts about whether Ronaldo still belonged on football's biggest stage, Houston provided a familiar answer. On a night built around history, Portugal's greatest-ever player once again made himself impossible to ignore.
