For nearly 90 minutes, Senegal looked destined for one of the biggest victories in its World Cup history, Belgium produced a finish few inside Seattle Stadium will ever forget.
Trailing by two goals with just minutes remaining, the Red Devils mounted an astonishing late comeback before Youri Tielemans converted a penalty deep into extra-time to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory and send Belgium into the Round of 16.
The winning goal arrived in the 125th minute after a lengthy VAR review awarded Belgium a spot kick for a foul on Tielemans in the penalty area. Amid protests, delays and mounting tension, the Aston Villa midfielder calmly buried the penalty, completing one of the greatest escapes of the tournament.
It was a cruel ending for Senegal, who had been the better side for much of the night.
The Lions of Teranga started on the front foot, with Ismaïla Sarr repeatedly troubling Belgium's back line. After striking the post early, Senegal found its breakthrough in the 25th minute when Sarr's header bounced off the upright and Habib Diarra reacted quickest to hammer home the rebound.
Belgium struggled to create meaningful chances, and Senegal doubled its advantage shortly after halftime through a moment of individual brilliance. Moussa Niakhaté's long pass split the Belgian defense, Sarr cushioned the ball expertly with his chest, and the Crystal Palace forward rifled an unstoppable finish beyond Thibaut Courtois to make it 2-0.
With Belgium staring at elimination, manager Rudi Garcia turned to his bench. The changes transformed the match.
Romelu Lukaku, introduced at halftime, finally gave Belgium life in the 86th minute, powering home Thomas Meunier's cross to cut the deficit in half. Barely three minutes later, Leandro Trossard floated a teasing delivery into the box, where Tielemans rose above the defense to head home a dramatic equalizer.
The momentum had completely shifted.
Extra time brought chances at both ends, but with penalties looming, Belgium thought it had found the winner when Dodi Lukébakio rattled the crossbar. Play continued until VAR intervened, spotting Lamine Camara clipping Tielemans inside the box moments earlier. After a lengthy review, referee Saíd Martínez pointed to the spot.
Tielemans ignored the delay, the gamesmanship around the penalty area and the pressure of the occasion, sending Mory Diaw the wrong way to complete Belgium's remarkable turnaround.
The comeback echoed Belgium's famous rally from 2-0 down against Japan at the 2018 World Cup, making the Red Devils the first nation to twice overturn a two-goal deficit in a World Cup knockout match.
For Senegal, it was a devastating collapse after producing one of its finest performances of the tournament. For Belgium, belief and resilience carried them from the brink of elimination into the Round of 16, where they will remain in Seattle to face the United States.
