France is back in the World Cup quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive tournament, but it took patience, composure and another decisive moment from Kylian Mbappé to finally break Paraguay’s resistance in a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Saturday in Philadelphia.
Playing through oppressive Fourth of July heat with temperatures nearing 100°F (38°C), Didier Deschamps’ side found itself drawn into exactly the type of match Paraguay wanted—physical, scrappy and short on clear-cut chances. But when the breakthrough finally arrived, it came from the player who has built his reputation on delivering in the biggest moments.
Mbappé converted a 70th-minute penalty after a VAR review determined Diego Gómez had brought him down inside the area, sending France into a quarterfinal showdown with Morocco and keeping Les Bleus’ title hopes firmly on track.
For more than an hour, Paraguay executed its game plan almost flawlessly. Fresh off a dramatic penalty-shootout upset over Germany, La Albirroja defended in compact numbers, slowed the tempo and frustrated one of the tournament’s most prolific attacks. France dominated possession but struggled to find openings against a disciplined defensive block, with Orlando Gill producing another assured performance between the posts.
The first half offered little attacking rhythm as Paraguay repeatedly disrupted France’s flow with physical challenges and tactical fouls. Tempers occasionally flared, particularly around Mbappé, who absorbed heavy treatment throughout the afternoon while refusing to let the frustration distract him.
France began to turn the screw after halftime. Ousmane Dembélé fired into the side netting from a quick restart before Manu Koné forced Gill into a spectacular save from distance as the pressure steadily increased.
The decisive moment arrived just before the 70-minute mark. Mbappé drove into the penalty area and went down under Gómez’s challenge. Play initially continued, but after a video review, the referee pointed to the spot. Mbappé calmly sent Gill the wrong way, scoring his seventh goal of the tournament and 19th across his World Cup career, leaving him just one shy of Lionel Messi’s all-time record while drawing level with the Argentine in the Golden Boot race.
Paraguay refused to fold, pushing for a late equalizer despite the draining conditions. Gill kept his side alive with two outstanding saves from Mbappé deep into stoppage time, but France's defense comfortably protected its narrow advantage to preserve its perfect record at the tournament.
The result was far tighter than many expected, yet knockout football rarely rewards style points. France entered the Round of 16 having scored 13 goals in five matches, but against Paraguay it was resilience rather than flair that carried them through.
For Paraguay, the defeat ends an impressive tournament that included one of the competition’s biggest upsets against Germany. For France, another quarterfinal awaits—and with Mbappé continuing to rewrite World Cup history, Les Bleus remain firmly among the favorites to lift the trophy once again.
