France's march toward a third World Cup title gathered more momentum on Tuesday as Kylian Mbappé delivered another statement performance, scoring twice in a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32 at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Bradley Barcola added the other goal as Didier Deschamps' side produced one of its most complete performances of the tournament, overwhelming Sweden with relentless attacking football and booking a Round of 16 meeting with surprise package Paraguay.
The scoreline was convincing, but it could have been far more emphatic. France carved open Sweden throughout the evening, only to be denied repeatedly by goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström and the woodwork.
After easing through the group stage with three wins from three, Les Bleus picked up where they left off. Mbappé thought he had broken the deadlock early on, only for a razor-thin offside decision to wipe out the goal. Minutes later, the Real Madrid forward struck the post, while Michael Olise's spectacular overhead kick crashed against the base of the upright before Ousmane Dembélé fired the rebound wide.
Sweden, who advanced as one of the tournament's best third-place finishers, survived wave after wave of pressure but offered little attacking threat of their own. Their best opportunity arrived just before halftime when Elliot Stroud blazed over from close range after France briefly switched off on the counterattack.
That miss proved costly.
Just before the break, Mbappé finally found the breakthrough. Collecting the ball after a cleverly worked short corner, the French captain shifted onto his right foot and curled an unstoppable finish into the far corner. He immediately sprinted toward Deschamps, embracing his manager in an emotional moment after the coach returned to the sidelines following the passing of his mother.
France needed only eight minutes after halftime to double its advantage. Olise, outstanding throughout, threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Barcola, who rifled his finish beyond Zetterström to put the result firmly in France's control.
Olise continued to orchestrate nearly every dangerous attack, and his creativity was rewarded again midway through the second half. A clever exchange released Mbappé in behind the Swedish defense, and the tournament's leading scorer calmly lifted his finish into the roof of the net for his second goal of the night.
The brace moved Mbappé to six goals at World Cup 2026, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race while also taking his overall World Cup tally to 18—just one shy of Messi's all-time record.
Sweden rarely threatened a response, with Viktor Gyökeres forcing Mike Maignan into his only significant save late on.
For France, however, the evening served as another reminder of why many consider them the team to beat. With Mbappé at his devastating best and Olise pulling the strings behind him, Les Bleus are beginning to look every bit like championship favorites.
