Voices from the Gold Cup Final

It was the second final that these two sides squared off in this summer. This time, the stage was Las Vegas, NV. Mexican and American fans poured into the city to watch their countries duel for the Gold Cup trophy. Before kick-off, with plenty of time to kill in Las Vegas, we decided to catch up with both sets of fans to see how much this occasion meant to them.

These are their voices.

Erik and Miki, from Hawaii.

“Sometimes I’m up at two o’clock in the morning because of the time difference in Hawaii, and I just enjoy it. I bring her along, but I really love this.”

“Sub Comandante,” from Salt Lake City.

“It was the first team that I was taught to support. The first team that I sat down to watch and learn about the game. To me, this was taught as a way to participate and live my culture even though we’re on this side of the border.”

Omar, from Atlanta.

“This isn’t even a soccer team. It’s my culture. It’s my adopted country. It’s my everything.”

Marcelo, Gustavo, and Joel, from Mexico City, Chicago, and Monterrey.

“It’s kind of a made-up bachelor party. I got married like two years ago, but they’re making up for it now, and it all kind of fell together.”
