Germany's World Cup campaign began with a statement victory in Houston, but for a brief moment on Sunday night, one of the tournament's most memorable stories belonged to Curaçao.

The four-time world champions eventually cruised to a 7-1 win in their Group E opener, yet the loudest roar inside Houston Stadium came midway through the first half when Livano Comenencia scored the first World Cup goal in Curaçao's history.

For a nation of just over 150,000 people making its tournament debut, it was a moment that transcended the final scoreline.

Germany had looked in complete control from the outset. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring after just six minutes, finishing a slick move involving Florian Wirtz as Julian Nagelsmann's side immediately imposed itself on the match. The early signs pointed toward a comfortable evening for the Germans.

Then came Curaçao's breakthrough.

After soaking up pressure, the Caribbean side capitalized on a rare opportunity when Comenencia found space in the penalty area and fired a shot through a crowd of defenders. A deflection carried the ball beyond the outstretched Manuel Neuer, sparking scenes of jubilation among Curaçao supporters and briefly silencing the sea of white shirts in the stands.

For 17 minutes, the smallest nation ever to appear at a World Cup stood level with one of the tournament's giants.

The fairy tale, however, was always going to require something extraordinary to continue.

Germany regained control before halftime through Nico Schlotterbeck, who rose unmarked to head home from a Nathaniel Brown corner in the 38th minute. Kai Havertz then converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was brought down in the box, sending Germany into the break with a commanding 3-1 lead.

Any hopes of a Curaçao comeback disappeared almost immediately after halftime. Jamal Musiala finished clinically just two minutes into the second half, and Germany never looked back.

Brown added a fifth on his World Cup debut before substitute Deniz Undav capped another flowing attack to make it six. Havertz completed his brace late on as Germany finished with seven goals and a six-goal winning margin that instantly places them atop Group E.

The result was exactly the kind of opening Nagelsmann had hoped for after Germany's disappointing group-stage exits in both 2018 and 2022. The attack looked fluid, Musiala appeared fully back to his electrifying best, and veterans such as Neuer provided calm leadership throughout.

Yet despite the scoreline, Curaçao left Houston with a piece of history of its own.

Dick Advocaat's side may have been overwhelmed by one of the tournament favorites, but Comenencia's goal ensured their first World Cup appearance will be remembered for more than just the result. For one night, the Blue Wave announced themselves on soccer's biggest stage.
