Ivory Coast vs Curaçao

Twenty years after making their World Cup debut, Ivory Coast have finally broken through.

A clinical 2-0 victory over Curaçao in Philadelphia secured the Elephants' first-ever place in the knockout rounds, ending years of frustration and near misses with a composed performance led by Nicolas Pépé's first World Cup brace.

Knowing a draw would be enough to advance from Group E, Emerse Faé's side wasted little time taking control. Just seven minutes in, rising star Yan Diomande pounced on a defensive mistake near the Curaçao penalty area before squaring for Pépé, who calmly swept a first-time finish into the net from close range.

The early breakthrough settled Ivory Coast, who dictated possession without ever needing to overextend themselves. Curaçao, meanwhile, struggled to recreate the resilience that earned the tournament debutants a historic draw against Ecuador earlier in the week.

The Caribbean side did threaten before halftime, with Juninho Bacuna weaving into the penalty area only to drag his effort wide. Tahith Chong also flashed a powerful strike just over the crossbar, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce.

Ivory Coast made sure there would be no late drama midway through the second half.

Ibrahim Sangaré slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Pépé, who timed his run expertly before lifting a composed left-footed finish beyond Eloy Room to double the advantage. It was a fitting moment for the Villarreal forward, whose international career has experienced its share of ups and downs after falling out of favor before returning to play a decisive role on the biggest stage.

"It is a source of pride and joy," Pépé said afterward. "We've qualified for the knockout stage for the people of Côte d'Ivoire. Now we want to go as far as possible."

For Ivory Coast, the result represents far more than simply reaching the Round of 32. Previous generations featuring stars like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré repeatedly fell just short despite possessing some of Africa's most talented squads. This group has now achieved what those celebrated teams could not, advancing from the group stage for the first time in four World Cup appearances.

Head coach Emerse Faé, who guided the Elephants to an unforgettable Africa Cup of Nations title two years ago, believes the squad's togetherness has been the difference.

"This group is growing," Faé said. "They compete with each other, but they stay united. That healthy competition helps everyone improve."

Curaçao exits the tournament with just one point, but its first World Cup campaign still leaves plenty to celebrate. The smallest nation by population ever to compete at a men's World Cup held Ecuador scoreless and consistently proved it belonged on football's biggest stage.

For Ivory Coast, however, the story continues. The Elephants advance as Group E runners-up after winning two matches at a World Cup for the first time and now await a Round of 32 showdown against either France or Norway, carrying with them the confidence that history no longer weighs on their shoulders.
